School Leaders and Situational Turmoil: Teachers In Crisis Exit

(posted here March 1 2011) The National Public Radio (NPR) Network carried this story: http://www.npr.org/2011/02/26/134083560/One-Americans-Escape-From-Libya?ft=1&f=1001 It is about Judith Drotar, one of the thousands of foreign expatriates who have fled Libya. She is the director of the U.S. School in Tripoli, and journeyed aboard the ferry from Libya to Malta. You can either read the transcript or download the mp3 and listen to the story on your mp3 player. The interview with Ms. Drotar describes what we might call 'logistics' in getting her teachers to the ferry.

Hopefully none of you will find yourselves leading in such a situation, but it is probably a good idea for you to think through what you might have done, just as practice in that unlikely event. And remember, for us in this class, and I think in reality, leadership is not always defined by a title. So think about what you might have done here. And I know you all join me in wishing all teachers in such situations a safe haven in all parts of the world right now. DOC
